Welcoming a new face
Amarli Wight is The Southern Argus’s new journalist, and is keen to get to delve into the stories of her new community.

My name is Amarli Wight, I am 20-years- old and the newest addition to The Southern Argus team.

I am in my final semester of a Bachelor of Journalism and Professional Writing at the University of South Australia. I am very excited to join The Argus and get amongst the Strathalbyn community with all it has to offer.

I have a passion for community driven news, environmentalism, and reporting on First Nations topics and issues. As, part of my studies I have also undertaken a sub-major in Aboriginal Studies.

What inspired me to apply for a role at The Argus, is that I have always seen myself working in a small community – where everyone knows everyone, and you bump into people everywhere you go.

I also value that The Argus reports on real local people, focusing on issues that matter to the people they are writing for.

I prefer feature writing where you are able to dive deeper into people’s stories and really get to know them.

This is an aspect of journalism I have always admired — highlighting voices that are otherwise unheard.

I also enjoy the softer side to news, with the 6 o’clock headlines filled with majority sad and hard news it’s important to share the positive side as well.

I have spent most of my life in SA, having grown up along the Glenelg foreshore and now live in Oaklands Park.

My childhood revolved around long days at the beach, which now plays a central role in my life.

The beach is somewhere I will always love and come back to.

I have always been a curious and outgoing person, wanting to know more and learning all that I can.

It was this curiosity paired with a passion for writing that led me to journalism, which since starting my degree I have only grown to love more.

What I am looking forward to most about working for The Argus is joining a close-knit team of passionate people.

I love getting to meet new people and getting to know them and their stories.

I am also looking forward to getting to know Strath and the wider communities better.

I have always loved this part of SA, with its beautiful scenery, delicious eats and welcoming people.

I have fond memories of catching the cockle train, digging for cockles in Goolwa, and stops at many bakeries along the drive down here.

I am excited to get involved in community events, learn about the rich history of the area, and hear your stories.

I want to report on stories that matter to you and your community.
