The time has come, after three years of planning and anticipation, to announce Strathalbyn’s spectacular 150th Agricultural Show is on track for the October long weekend, with The Southern Argus thrilled to partner as the Major Sponsor.
Locals may have already ‘seen the signs’ popping up around the town’s entrances, as the Strathalbyn Agricultural Show Society approaches this year’s long-awaited event with new branding, a new committee, and new attractions.
While the 2022 show will be revitalised after a three-year, COVID-enforced hiatus, President Rex Liebelt said the event’s historic roots would be cherished, and old exhibits returned.
“It is quite exciting that this year, finally, we are able to host the 150th show,” he said.
“It would have been the 150th show in 2020, but it was cancelled, and then cancelled again, but this year everything is all on track thanks to much community support.
“We have some surprises in store, and certain attractions will return after an absence like the woodchopping and blacksmith demonstrations.
“Some of our sections have special classes for the 150th, like in the cookery, people will be able to compete in some old-style cake classes.
“Many are thrilled to have this major function return to the local events calendar.”
On October 27, 1855, 20 people attended the inaugural meeting of the Strathalbyn Agricultural Society, chaired by Dr John Rankine, and the first show was held on March 5, 1856.
A decade later, the first Southern Argus and River Murray Advertiser hit the streets, sharing a long history supporting local communities and reporting on the annual show event.
“I think it is fantastic The Argus and show committee are working together,” Mr Liebelt said.
“I am impressed with the quality of the newspaper, and believe it to be a great partnership.”
Southern Argus co-director Darren Robinson similarly expressed excitement at the partnership.
“I am very pleased that The Southern Argus can play a vital role in contributing to the long-term success of the Strathalbyn Show and, as a result, be recognised as the Major Sponsor of the 150th annual show,” he said.
“Whilst it has been a difficult two years for many local families, I feel this year’s show will be looked upon favourably in years to come.
“It should be viewed as a celebration for our community and an opportunity to come together to enjoy the sights, sounds and flavours of this year’s attractions.”
Being a major contributor for more than 150 years, Mr Robinson said it was “fitting” your local newspaper is recognised as the naming partner.
“It has brought much joy for our team to rally behind the show and offer much-needed support to the dedicated committee,” he said.
“As a community-minded paper, we would encourage any opportunity to support more local events.
“Our team is passionate about our community and the more support you provide to us, the more support we can reinvest back into the community.”
Meanwhile, the weekend will kick-off on Sunday, October 2, with the horses-in-action competition at Strathalbyn’s polo grounds, followed by Monday’s jam-packed day of family fun at the town oval, hall and showgrounds.
Carnival rides, sideshow alley, agricultural judging, and other entertainment will draw crowds to the centre of town, with the show starting at 10am.
Section convenors will fill the show hall with interesting displays, including cut flowers, photography, arts and crafts, woodwork, needlework, cookery, preserves, home brew, historical displays and more.
Strath Show Us Your Talent, Southern Argus colouring-in competition, Strath trail bag, numerous trade sites and live music are also among the exciting entertainment on offer.
“We always need people to help over the show weekend, without having to be involved during the lead-up, like setting and packing up etc,” Mr Liebelt said.
“If anyone in the community is interested in helping in some way, we would appreciate it.
“We are hopeful to see an increase in numbers, as most people are excited in seeing the show come back.”
