Treasure hunters on a quest for a bargain should prepare to drop anchor at the Strathalbyn Oval next weekend for the annual Sunday Treasure Market.

Run by the Rotary Club of Strathalbyn, the market will be held at the oval, near Carruthers Show Hall, on August 20 from 10am to 4pm in conjunction with the Antiques and Collectables Fair weekend.

The market commences from 7.30am at a $2 entry fee, with accompanied patrons aged 16 and under getting in for free.

Antique and trinket enthusiasts will have an opportunity to browse through collectables, old tools, art, books, DVDs,
and other items one might find at a garage  sale.

Co-ordinator, Craig Maidment said it was a day all about ‘trash and treasure’.

“It’s a place for bargains moreso than big-ticket items,” he said.

“I think people just like browsing, and if they are a collector, it’s an opportunity not to be missed to find that missing piece or add to your collection.

“It’s a day out, and the fact you can not only come to this, but you’ve got the halls and antiques stores in Strath – it’s all connected – is great.”

Last year more than 1,000 people wandered the market, and even more are expected this year with more stallholders anticipated than ever before.

About 40 sellers have already confirmed their attendance, some travelling from as far as Auburn, Mildura, and Victoria, with more estimated to come.

Funds raised from the market will go towards the Rotary Club’s Automated External Defibrillator (AED) project.

“The big thing for us going forward is still our AED program because we need to raise $3,000 to buy one, then we will put
those out in the community,” Mr Maidment said.

“There are still some gaps around we’d like to fill, and we’re getting requests for them now from different organisations.”

The Lions Club will return with its food van, and a coffee van will also be on site for patrons.

Sellers can apply for a stall until the Friday before the event.
