Southern Argus journalist Giorgina McKay’s hard work and consistency paid off on Friday night when she was named Country Press SA’s Young Journalist of the Year for 2022.
Giorgina graduated from the University of South Australia in 2019, before starting her career at The Murray Pioneer in early 2020.
She joined the team at The Argus in March 2021, not long after it was purchased by the Barossa’s Robinson family.
“It’s an honour to be crowned Young Journalist of the Year so early in my career,” she said.
“It was a big surprise when they called out my name, as there are so many other worthy candidates in that category.
“I’m grateful not only to the judge for considering me as the top candidate, but to the Robinson family and the rest of the team at The Argus and The Leader who I partially contribute my success to, and to my family for their ongoing support.”
According to the judge’s comments, Giorgina impressed with the depth and strength of her articles.
“Her entries were diverse and covered issues from homelessness, to life-saving rehabilitation, to recognising outstanding long-term local volunteer efforts,” judge Leigh Radford said.
“Giorgina writes with a maturity that matches seasoned journalists and produces work which sets a standard for her paper.
“Her overall entry was nuanced, provided insight into her work and clear context for her stories.”
Argus Editor Sara Gilligan echoed the judge’s comments and congratulated Giorgina on her success.
“Giorgina has been vital in lifting our publication to where it is today,” she said.
“As a journalist, Giorgina is an all-rounder who turns over an impressive story count and has immersed herself in the local community, even joining women’s football at Strathalbyn.
“As her editor I am considerably proud of her achievements to date, and hope to mentor her for many years to come.”
The category is sponsored by Member for Barker Tony Pasin and offers a cash prize.
