A Macclesfield resident is collecting donations to send to Aboriginal communities who were recently forced to evacuate their homes after flooding.

Hundreds of residents from remote Northern Territory communities, Kalkarindji, Daguragu, Pigeon Hole, and Palumpa, were evacuated after major flooding in March, which caused the Victoria River to break its banks.

Residents have been living off country at Howard Springs after being airlifted from their homes.

Feeling moved by the issue, Macclesfield resident Karen Stephenson contacted the Kalkarindji Child and Family Centre, which looks after about 67 families and is a distribution-point for aid.

“All the families returned home on April 26, and are living in pods while they clean, repair and rebuild their homes,” she said.

“They stated… any help would be appreciated.

“Remote Aboriginal communities often state they are not being heard.

“I would like to show them that fellow Australians hear and care enough to send some help, when they have lost so much.”

Ms Stephenson is collecting donations to send to the communities, with the most-needed items being linen, blankets, warm clothes for children under five, female sanitary products, and non-perishable foods.

If you would like to contribute to Ms Stephenson’s collection, contact her on: (0413 806 231) before Thursday, June 8.
