Southern Argus supports local RSLs through donations

2 min read

The Southern Argus has joined the community in supporting the Goolwa and Strathalbyn and Districts RSLs, by making donations to the local branches.

Local businesses jumped on board to support The Argus’ seven-page Anzac Day feature last week, with advertising proceeds donated.

Strathalbyn and Districts RSL Sub Branch President Cate Goodall said the donation would go towards “an exciting” mural project.

“We have actually commissioned a silo artist who is going to do a series of murals up the stairway into the RSL depicting Australia’s conflicts,” she said.

“This will cover all theatres, all aspects and every type of machine, to the horse to the latest and greatest and that is under way.

“Artist Garry Duncan lives at Kanmantoo and painted one of the silos at Waikerie.

“An enormous thank you to the businesses who participated and The Argus for the donation.”

Goolwa RSL President Howden Jennings similarly expressed gratitude.

“We’re very appreciative and pleased,” he said.

“We’ve had good support from (The Argus).”

The Goolwa funds will be contributed towards one of the RSL’s projects, which supports veterans and their families, and further extends into the community including supporting junior development through education and sport.

As well as educating local students, Goolwa RSL supports local junior sporting teams including football, netball, Nippers surf life savers, cricket and golf.

The Currency Creek Cemetery also has a RSL section which is being refurbished and renovated.

Southern Argus Managing Director Darren Robinson was pleased to continue the annual tradition of donating funds.

“As your local newspaper, it is important to us that we continue to give back to the community that demonstrates their support for us,” he said.

“The thoughtfulness of the local business community has again enabled us to provide a generous donation to the Strathalbyn and Goolwa RSL sub branches.

“These important funds will provide a valuable contribution in supporting the outstanding work of the two clubs and their members.”

Mr Robinson thanked all involved in the advertising feature.

“The team at The Southern Argus provide our sincere thanks to all of the participating businesses in last week’s ‘Commemorating Anzac’ promotion,” he added.

“This feature helps to generate important funds for the local RSLs and allows us to keep the Anzac spirit alive through our quality editorial coverage.”
